Preservica Special Topic Training: Using PAX packages for ingest

This 1-hour advanced training course introduces learners to PAX (Preservation Asset eXchange) packages — the structure Preservica uses to ingest and export complex, multi-file assets. Learners will gain a solid understanding of how Preservica models assets through its four-layer hierarchy (Asset → Representation → Content Object → Generation), and when and why a PAX package is required over a simple single-file ingest, using worked examples.

The course covers:
•    The purpose and structure of PAX packages, and how they differ from OPEX metadata files
•    The three use cases using a PAX: multiple representations, multiple content objects, and multiple generations
•    Step-by-step PAX folder construction, including naming rules for representations, content objects, and generation folders
•    Manifest, fixity, and OPEX metadata requirements
•    Common ingest errors, their causes, and how to resolve them
•    A pre-flight checklist to validate packages before ingest
•    Q&A session

Prerequisites:
•    Working knowledge of Preservica — familiarity with navigating the platform and performing basic ingest operations
•    Understanding of the Preservica asset model — awareness of what an asset, representation, content object, and generation are (covered in the session background slides, but prior exposure is beneficial)
•    Basic file management skills — ability to create and organise folder structures on their local machine or network drive
•    Familiarity with OPEX is helpful but not required — OPEX is referenced throughout but not taught in this session; learners requiring deeper OPEX knowledge should complete the OPEX Metadata module on the Community Hub
