Job Introduction

Archives Technology & Services is responsible for the management and storage of the BBC’s catalogue of content,  this includes stores of physical material and a range of systems and products which make BBC content accessible to our audiences, programme makers and partners. The BBC’s Archive grows on a daily basis , as well as looking after nearly 100 years of heritage we also develop and design new products and systems to capture and make accessible a huge variety of content.    

 

This is a significant senior role and is the subject matter expert on the development, management and use of our archive collections. The role is responsible for the BBC’s Written Archives and Records Management archives and teams who preserve and maintain documents and records from all areas of the BBC and make them available. This role will develop policy and high standards of curatorial practice for these collections. The Written Archives Collection holds the many millions of working documents created by the BBC since it was founded in 1922 including documents such as letters, memos, production files, scripts amongst many others. Material is held in paper form, microfilm, digital formats and have been created in electronic form since 2000.

The role brings experience and in-depth knowledge of these collections to the organisation, contributing to policies and processes, and will have overall curatorial responsibility for these collections, leading on collection development, description and cataloguing, interpretation and engagement, research and other collaborations.

Role Responsibility

  • Develop a vision for the BBC’s Written Archives and Corporate Records that is integrated with the BBC’s overall strategic objectives
  • Build and maintain effective relationships with wide range of stakeholders ensuring curatorial practices and policies are aligned and relevant to the needs of the organisation
  • Lead teams of specialist curators, archivists and librarians to ensure the management of our collections represents the diversity of output produced by the BBC
  • Lead and support a diverse and inclusive culture for our teams
  • Engage with the industry and conduct regular benchmarking of our practices and policies against industry standards and comparable library and heritage institutions
  • Ensure budget and financial control on all acquisition, selection, preservation and disposal activities
  • Provide expertise and guidance on archives curatorial policy and strategy for the organisation

The Ideal Candidate

  • A higher education qualification in library, archives, records or information management; or extensive experience in managing media content repositories.
  • Proven ability to deliver services at a strategic level, leading and taking responsibility for alignment with organisational priorities and objectives.
  • Experience of developing high performing multi-disciplinary teams, giving clear direction and assessing performance in order to influence strategies, policies and services.
  • Experience of working as part of a senior management team with high levels of credibility and a proven ability to instil confidence in senior stakeholders.
  • Excellent motivational and communication skills; experience of presenting to large and high-profile audiences.
